“Come near to me” in Genesis 45:4 implies the brothers cringed back in terror. Jewish legends say the brothers were so shocked that their souls left their bodies and it was only by a miracle of God their souls came back. Joseph’s testimony: And Joseph said to his brothers,
“Please come near to me.” So they came near. Then he said: “I am Joseph your brother, whom you sold into Egypt. But now, do not therefore be grieved or angry with yourselves because you
sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life. For these two years the famine has been in the land, and there are still five years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvesting. And God sent me before you to preserve posterity for you in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance. So now it was not you who sent me here, but God; and He has made me a
father to Pharaoh, and lord of his entire house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.

After weeping with a loud voice, he said to his brothers, “I am Joseph; doth my father yet live? And then he asked them to come near to him and he said unto them “Be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life.” He went on to tell them that God had sent him before them to preserve them a posterity in the earth during the famine, and to save their lives by a great deliverance. In other words, he told them don’t feel bad or down on yourselves for what you have done to me, it was all apart of God’s plan and purpose for my life and for theirs too since they too would reap the benefits of having a brother that was in great authority and able to provide for them during the famine.

What did Joseph say to his brothers?
“Come near to me (Gen. 45:4″)… I am Joseph your brother, whom you sold into Egypt. But now, do not therefore be grieved or angry with yourself because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life… for it was not you that sent me here, but God;”
